Trading with art has changed

During the last 20 years art trade changed in many ways.
The society and with it her preferences have changed. Long-term strategies and maintaining on a once found life model for a long period do not exist any more. People act with other and changing default. They adapt themselves to varying currents, are more ready to risk and leave old pattern behind easiliy.

The consequences concerning art trade are immense. Art trade, which acts with classical values - excluding contemporary art - sticks to unmoveable values and defines himself with the qualities and information about the objects.

However, the majority of customers act completely different. They are marked by time, act fast and change several times during their lifetime their predilections and interests. They are influenced by quickly varying currents.

The media have a big portion in this development with considerable effects. Not to forget the decline of the classical collector and widely-read art lover.
The interest for an object is not any longer because of its historical or its artificial qualities.

Interior design

Modern housing conditions become more and more the background for a purchase decision. Today complementing overloaded rooms with an additional object which is purchased because of his rarity, his qualities or a long search is more and more unusual. Today clients contact art dealers not because of a special need. Irrational factors, emotions and their spatial circumstances rather lead them to contact a dealer.

The art dealer has to feel this emotion and find the right object, after he has tried to fathom the momentary relations.
Clients are more design-oriented and expect the perfect symbiosis between the new acquisition and their actual circumstances, while regarding less and less the isolated object.

Minimalism and art trade

Apart classical art buyers the art dealer must argue more and more with the spreading minimalism in the interior style of younger prospective customers. To disclose this part of the clientele, he has to tune his offer partially to it.

He must learn to recognise those objects in the purchase which open the potential to him to enrich modern and sometimes minimalist furnished rooms in an incomparable manner and to be able to satisfy the customer with it. Herebye he leaves the frame of classical art trade and becomes more and more the adviser, primarily, concerning the equipment.

New group of clients

The challenge in art trade is not only to find the right objects for sale, but also to develop new customer circles.

Customers that are interested in life style and residential design without having approached art trade up to now. The art dealer should be recognised as somebody, who gives advice on the equipment elements and be included as a partner in suitable projects. He should know the purchase habits after which these circles act. If the art dealer succeeds in interesting younger customers with his offer or advice, he will also succeed in letting arise the eager art buyer whose motivation for buying art is passion and joy.
